The ‘Dushshasana Vadhe Yakshagana’ that is going to be unfolded before you is a creative venture blossomed in the ever imaginative mind of ‘Theatre Yaksha’, Udupi. Theatre Yaksha, nurtured under the dynamic leadership of Prithviraj Kavathar, has been constantly engaged in the task of rendering Yakshagana genuinely true to its traditional ethos. Kavathar’s experiments are certainly actuated by his proclaimed mission of making the art of Yakshagana more and more ‘Yakshaganeeya’.
The present performance is blissfully free from the popular components that appear in the guise of tradition. In order to recapture the subtleties of this art form, a few substantial changes have been introduced in this show. Besides entertaining the audience, a show is expected to evoke reflective responses on the thematic concerns of a chosen mythological text. Keeping this in mind, Draupathi and Krishna are shown here deliberating upon the inevitable catastrophe that awaited Dussasana. Breaking free from the popular practice of placing the younger Pandavas on a lower pedestal, in this show, Nakula and Sahadeva have been put on par with the senior Pandavas in stature and dignity.
Deviating from the well-established convention, Bheema will appear as a Satvika initially and turn into Rudrabheema only as he gets into a fierce encounter with Dushshasana. Similarly, Dussasana’s character will have two components here. In the beginning, he will appear as a Rajasa character, and his transformation into Ghora Dushshasana will occur only when he takes on Rudrabhhema. The women characters, who normally come before us as worldly beings devoid of much intellect, will appear here as strong voices demanding considerable attention. Moving away from the practice of assigning the roles of Shatha Kauravas to all and sundry, here in this performance one will find full-fledged actors portraying them. Above all, the show will feature the sonorous compositions of Sri. Bottkere Purushothama Poonja. (Source: Dr. T.K Raveendran)
